Engagement Rate Calculator

Engagement rate is the sum of a post's likes, comments, saves and shares divided by your follower count or by the post's reach, shown as a percentage. It tells you how strongly your content lands with your audience. This free calculator computes both formulas instantly in your browser and sends no data anywhere.

Enter the totals for one post or for a period. Leave any field you do not know empty.

Enter your engagement numbers and your followers or reach to see the result.

How do you calculate engagement rate?

Start by adding up a post's likes, comments, saves and shares. For engagement rate by followers, divide that total by your follower count; for engagement rate by reach, divide it by the number of accounts that saw the post. Multiply by 100 either way. Enter your numbers above and both results appear instantly.

The two main engagement rate formulas
FormulaCalculationWhen to use it
By followers(likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ followers × 100Comparing your account with competitors or industry averages
By reach(likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ reach × 100Measuring how many of the people who saw a post reacted to it

Should you calculate by followers or by reach?

The two formulas answer different questions. Engagement by followers uses public numbers, so it works for comparing accounts and industries. Engagement by reach uses the reach figure only the account owner sees in insights, and measures the response of people who actually saw the post. Compare each result only with numbers calculated the same way.

  • On Instagram, find reach under View insights on the post; on TikTok, in the video analytics.
  • A post that reaches Explore can have more reach than you have followers; then the reach formula is more meaningful.
  • Average your last 10 to 20 posts instead of a single post to smooth out random spikes.
  • Keep the interactions you count the same every month, or the comparison breaks.

What is a good engagement rate?

There is no single right number: it varies by platform, industry and account size. Rival IQ's 2026 benchmark report, based on 2025 data and the by-followers formula, puts the median engagement rate per post at 2.01% on TikTok, 0.30% on Instagram, 0.21% on YouTube and 0.03% on X. Your own past posts remain the best benchmark.

These are medians of company accounts sampled at random from 18 industries, calculated by followers. Do not compare your engagement by reach with this table; rates by reach usually come out higher.

How can you improve your engagement rate?

The most reliable way is to post consistently and create content your audience wants to save, comment on or share. Useful posts get saved, questions get comments, and helpful or funny content gets shared. Calculate your rate the same way every month to see which formats work, and drop the ones that do not.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate Instagram engagement rate?

Add up the post's likes, comments, saves and shares, divide by your follower count and multiply by 100. For example, a post with 250 engagements on an account with 10,000 followers has an engagement rate by followers of 2.5%. For engagement by reach, use reach instead of followers.

Are the numbers I enter sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser; the numbers are not sent to a server or stored. Because this tool does not use AI, there is no daily limit either, so you can calculate as often as you like.

Should views count as engagement?

No. A view is an impression measure, not an engagement. Engagement rate counts only deliberate actions: likes, comments, saves and shares. Track video watch time and view rate as separate metrics.

Why is my engagement rate low?

Rates naturally drop as an account grows, because not every follower sees every post. Bought or inactive followers, irregular posting and content that does not fit the audience also pull the rate down. Compare the result with your own past posts before industry averages.

Is engagement rate the same as reach rate?

No. Reach rate is the number of accounts that saw a post divided by your followers, and shows how far you got. Engagement rate measures how many of those viewers or followers reacted. Tracking both gives a more accurate picture.
